Flue Liner Repair
What is a Flue Liner?
A Flue Liner is a term used to describe the main passage way out of the home for heat and any gases created from the fireplace. A flue liner can be made from metal, concrete/mortar like materials, or vitreous clay (most common). Flue liners can vary in size, but they all achieve the same function and need to have an air-tight seal from top to bottom to function properly. Any deterioration, improper installation, or inadequate sizing can quickly cause a dangerous situation when using your fireplace.
When does a chimney need to be “Relined” or “Repaired”?
- Gaps or Missing Mortar Joints between the Clay Tiles.
- Spalling or flaking on the Clay Tiles.
- Vertical or Longitudinal Cracks in the Clay Tiles.
- If the tiles were not supported correctly during installation.
- If the tiles have shifted due to settling.
- If the tiles originally installed aren’t adequately sized to vent the fireplace or appliance they service.
- Damage due to lightning strike, flue fire, or settling.
- If a metal flue has rusted or has separated.
Why is it important to Reline a Chimney?
As you can see, a lot of things can cause issues with your chimney’s flue liner. Even a small defect can drastically affect the performance of your system and put your home at risk of a flue fire. While fires are the greatest hazard, there are also others when it comes to using your fireplace. A fireplace system that is not operating properly can emit poisonous and carcinogenic gasses that can be dangerous if not properly vented. If heat loss from a fireplace is occurring it can pose a risk to combustibles in the interior walls and roof as this heat exposure over time dries them out, allowing them to ignite at a much lower temperature. Issues with your fireplace’s liner can cause further damage to the system and even your home, leading to more money out of your pocket.
